Jewish Life in Small Town South
Welcome to my final project for Southern Jewish Writers! Through my project, you will have the chance to explore some of the smaller Jewish communities of the Southern United States and in doing so, you will be able to see what being Jewish in the Small Town South meant.
Jews in Small Town South are a "story of Jewish merchants -- first peddlers and then shop owners -- who helped create a merchant class in the rural South and then saw their communities wither and die as their children left" (Applebome).
My project will allow you to follow the journey of these small town Jews. Beginning with the demographics of earliest Jewish settlers to these areas in the 1700s, who began their lives as peddlers and small Jewish store owners, you will follow their lives and explore the impact they had on their communities. You will learn a little bit about what it was like to live as a Small Town Jew, why their populations are dwindling, and finally, the fate of these communities today.
My goal of this project is to spread awareness of these communities so that they can go from extant to extinct with dignity!!
